Not Walden Pond
NOT WALDEN POND, glass tiles, concrete, water, 125 x 70 cm, London, 2002, private collection
This pond has been commissioned for a private garden in North London. It is a shallow pool with a colourful mosaic as its base. When standing next to the piece it is impossible to merge the enigmatic variety of colours and shapes shimmering through the water surface into anything familiar. From the distance however there is a discovery to be made: ”Perrier!” is the message, the worldwide household name for mineral water. The logo of this brand name has been digitally scanned in such manner that each individual pixel found its correspondent as a glass tile. What is abstract when looked at closely becomes concrete from a distance.
